july's netflix buffet [watching]
july is about music, rock on!
"fanny and alexander" - i've been putting off watching this for a long time. how long? i've had the disc since living at my previous place in november. this is supposed to be a classic, a masterpiece, at least critics lists say so. and after holding onto this movie for so damn long, i'm really not sure why. i'm not saying it's bad, it's just, really? kids get a new evil step-parent. we've all seen it. i guess the director lived this. anyway, time to move on and not be such a parent, right? right!
"nirvana: live at reading" - i wouldn't allow myself to be a nirvana fan while kurt cobain was alive. i know, i'm weird like that. catching them on mtv performing "territorial pissings" did warm me up to them though. and i was mowing the lawn, listening to them on the radio perform on mtv unpluuged, which was rather good. this is the flipside. the good plugged in performance. nice song choice, good footage. if you like the band, it's worth it.
"placebo" - since i like the band now, at least their singles, i thought it would be good to catch up and see the bits i haven't seen. for fans only.
"sigur ros: helma" - slow, chillout music. if you like that, if you like sigur ros, i think you will love "helma". it's just so beautiful that it had me wondering why i stopped listening to the band. they are great musicians and work well together. the idea to play in remote areas was interesting. the capturing of this on film, spectacular. the music, hauntingly beautiful. big thumbs up.
"bjork: vessel"
"bjork: shepherds bush empire"
"bjork: cambridge
"bjork: mtv: unplugged & live"
bjork released a shitload of dvds and at the time i bought a few of the discs but left those behind in the divorce. i'm trying to catch up on the discs i didn't buy. i can see why i didn't buy them. these are not exactly my favorite periods and for me with bjork it's a real hit or miss with her albums. she has 2 rock solid ones for me and unless it's a concert chock full of those songs, it's not worth it for me to purchase. still, she's a great performer.
