september's netflixing [watching]

here is what i netflixed in september. i'm trying to complete some lists on listsofbests.com and so mostly i got movies that are on those lists.

the robe
south pacific
i got these 2 for a list. now i'm almost done with "top grossing films of the 1950s", just 1 left to go and it's not available through netflix right now. "the robe" was a christ-related film, not so into it. "south pacific" was one of those musicals i just couldn't get into (what's with the incredibly long opening of only music? to give people time to get into the theater?) but now i know where some songs come from like "gonna wash that man right out of my hair".

close encounters of the third kind - i got this for the "top grossing films of the 1970s" list. now i have 2 left to go. this movie didn't make much of an impression on me, sorry.

dead alive
the frighteners
i got these for the list "the movies of peter jackson". now i have 1 left to go. i wasn't sure if i had seen "dead alive" or not. watching it, some parts were vaguely familiar but i'd forgotten almost all the damn film so it was worth renting. it's humorous horror. "the frighteners" is based on a stephen king book. it was pretty good actually. had some comedy going on there. i never thought stephen king was good at scary. he's better at other kinds of stories. but then again, i haven't read his very famous scary books.

the muppets wizard of oz - growing up, i thought i had seen all the muppets movies but then i made a list and realized they kept making movies. damn, this sucked. i don't think post-henson muppet movies are very good. i have 1 muppet movie left. i hope they don't make any more as they're ruining a classic.

the thing
the hitcher
i got both of these for the "bravo's 100 scariest movie moments" list. damn, these were not scary and didn't have a really scary moment for me. i guess you had to be there when they were released. "the thing" was just lame lame lame. "the hitcher" was like, um, i thought i was working on a horror list but this isn't horror. i realize scary moment doesn't mean horror but hey, that's what i was thinking.

the texas chainsaw massacre: the beginning
texas chainsaw massacre: next generation
i got both of these movies so that i could say i've seen every texas chainsaw film as the original is one of my favorite movies. i didn't think either would be good. how can you top the original? both of these were their own things but i saw them in the same way. i saw it trying to be its own thing perhaps but then each were going back to the original in some key points. i didn't want to like it but there's something about the original storyline that i like and so i liked these 2 movies more than i should've for a sequel/remake/prequel sort of thing. the only thing i didn't like was that they named leatherface in one of the movies. they called him tommy. no no no!!! it can't be tommy!

the adventures of sharkboy & lavagirl - i had heard this movie really sucks but i want to see all of robert rodriguez's movies because i like him so much as a filmmaker. i knew that this film was started by an idea one of his kids had. i know robert loves his children. but this movie was just bad. maybe kids like it. i don't know. but this adult doesn't like it.
