july's netflixing [watching]
here's what i watched in july.
"director's series, vol. 3: the work of director michel gondry" - i wanted to watch the music videos by the artists i like, even if i've seen them before or might have a copy on dvd, to see if i can get a sense of the director's style and then to see what else he has done. mostly, i just skipped around and watched the artists i like.
"emmanuel's gift" - one of those documentaries aimed to move you with tales of people who overcome issues in their lives. it was good but it felt like it was stretched out too long, like they were trying to make a movie out of something that was more like a tv special.
"pj harvey on tour: please leave quietly" - lately i've been getting into pj harvey again so i wanted to see what she's like live. recently my favorite song is "the letter" and i wanted to see it performed live but that's the only track on the dvd that was fucked up and wouldn't play. *sigh*
"bjork: medulla videos" - i didn't like "medulla" when it came out, but watching these videos helped me to somewhat appreciate the music so i think i'll give it another chance.
"the iron ladies" - funny stuff from thailand about a gay volleyball team, based on a true story. i think this film was on the list of some film festival and that's how it ended up in my queue.
"dream lover" - i have no idea how this ended up in my queue. it was trying to be all twisted end scary but it was just one of those i saw it late night on cable type deals.
"mayor of the sunset strip" - growing up in LA and listening to kroq, i know of rodney bingenheimer and a friend used to be a friend and we went to canter's and all that. i never liked the guy. he's creepy. he's into young, skinny asian women and i really hate the white man's fetish of asian women. i wanted to see this just to learn more about rodney and it just painted the picture of this really sad person in a way that you can't feel sorry for the guy.
"promises" - if you're interested in israel/palestine relations, this is an interesting film on the child's perspective of things. you hear these kids talk and realize how much they have absorbed from their parents and other adults. it's amazing, the things some of these kids say. i really don't want to get into the israel/palestine issue right now but i recommend watching this.
"sonic youth: corporate ghost: the videos 1990-2002" - omg, i'm soooo into sonic youth after watching these videos. i didn't realize how many of their songs i like. i've started playing albums of theirs that i didn't even realize i have. for now, just the hits that were in this dvd compilation. later i'll try to get into the other tracks on the albums.
"jesus christ superstar" - i grew up with my mom and other adults saying that this was such a great movie. i believed it to be so without ever watching it. i've finally seen it! what crap! i can't believe this shit was popular. fucking 70s!
"the discreet charm of the bourgeoisie" - i need to see more luis buñuel movies so i got this one. this title has always stood out to me, as well as the movie poster for it. the movie's not weird but it's kinda odd. how can you explain it? it's just one of those things.
