nin | ja tour in chula vista [listening]
last night we went to see nine inch nails and jane's addiction in chula vista at the cricket wireless amphitheater and since we're down here, just made a weekend of it and spent today in san diego. we chose to do this as they are playing in irvine for the los angeles area on a week night. i'm sorry but that's just fucking wrong. trying to get to irvine after work on a week night? hahahahaa. surely you jest. plus it's at irvine meadows. fuck that shit! i dislike irvine meadows intensely.
the opening band was street sweeper social club and thanks to the internet, i know what the setlist was. it's tom morello's new bad and so it really was like rage against the machine part 2. and just like rage against the machine, at first the songs and are interesting but then it all just becomes the same. i can admire that tom morello spent a long time practicing and working on creating his sound, however the end product of the songs is somewhat lacking. it just doesn't hit the spot for me.
setlist:
fight smash win
somewhere in world
the oath
100 little curses
promenade
nobody moves
kick out the jams (with trent reznor)
after that was nine inch nails and it seems that's what the majority of the audience came out to see. a lot of people idolize trent reznor and i'm sorry but i just don't see it. perhaps if this was 1994 but it's 2009! i really liked nine inch nails when they first made it big. going to lollapalooza in 1991 solidified me as a fan. however, since then things have not been so good. i didn't think "the downward spiral" was as good as others did at the time of release. i had serious issues with the mix and track order back then but now it's good. however, no studio album since then has been decent. the last good song was "burn". which is why i'm glad they played some of the older songs i like but live the quality is not so good. i was able to figure out most of the setlist but again, thanks to the internet i know what the setlist was for sure. lastly, damn, trent has gotten buff. when the hell did this happen? shows you how out of it i am with nine inch nails.
setlist:
home
1,000,000
terrible lie (no vocal, whole sound cut out and they had to restart)
march of the pigs
metal
the becoming
i'm afraid of americans (introduced as a bowie collaboration)
burn
gave up
la mer
the fragile
gone, still
the way out is through
wish
(survivalism--on setlist only, i don't think they played this)
the hand that feeds
head like a hole
hurt
finally, the reason why we went, jane's addiction! i can't believe they started the show with "three days". to me, that's like a climax song, not something to warm up to. i was really happy to finally see eric avery play with the band as i had to leave the first lollapalooza early and i missed them. since then, it's kinda been my life's goal to catch up! i've seen just about every project the guys have done since then live and gotten the albums of course, plus so much more. i was happy to see eric happy. to see him smile when looking at the other members was great. however, i think this was the worst jane's show i have ever been to, sorry. i just wasn't feeling it. perry was the best singer of the night and yet it wasn't right. dave changed up the solo to "three days". that's fine. go and improvise. however, there are a couple notes in that solo that i absolutely love and that he didn't play them at all, well, that was like unsatisfactory sex. there's no climax in "three days" without those damn notes in the solo. i noticed dave has gone back to ibanez guitars. searching around the internet, it seems that twiddle thumbs was the only person to get a real jane's setlist as the others got this joke setlist. damn those staff have a sense of humor!
setlist:
three days
whores
ain't no right
pigs in zen
then she did...
mountain song
standing in the shower... thinking
been caught stealing
ted, just admit it
oceansize
encore:
summertime rolls (the only song dave played with his prs)
stop!

today was checking out balboa park and eating at a new vegan place for us and shopping at a vegan store, of course! the japanese garden at balboa park is not worth it.
