mac woes [geeking]

i am having itunes issues on the old tower. i downloaded the latest update and now i can't open itunes. it just won't fucking open. so i decided to downgrade. only, i couldn't remember what version exactly was it. hmm.. so i downloaded 1 version back. nope, still no good. then 2 versions back, nope, not this either. shit. it was one or the other but it's no good. itunes will not recognize the library on the external drive. by some magic i can open itunes fresh without anything in the library but that's not what i fucking want. my laptop is back at my new place so i decide to go there to do some work, then return to try some final things, including checking the version on my laptop because it surely must be the same. this is just a reminder to all kids out there not to do any upgrades until everything has been backed up and you're ready to truly say goodbye to an old computer.

i go home and i cannot use messenger or certain websites on the laptop. (no secure websites will open.) what gives? now this is a new place with a new internet connection so i haven't really messed with things. is there a firewall? what's going on? not sure. i read some internet tips including the solve everything restart. restart did no good. something tells me to check the keychain. i open it and all the info in there is lost. no passwords. well then of course i can't get into secure sites if it forgot my password, but why the bloody hell didn't it prompt me to log in again? that's why messenger wouldn't connect either, but again, why not ask me for a password? surely there must be something else to this puzzle but after all these years, i'm so damn tired of troubleshooting and i just want things to work. screw the why things went wrong. just work damnit!

in the interim i downloaded a different chat client and was conversing briefly with my friend whose husband is a geek and i didn't want to get into my problems but she ended up being the messenger between the two of us, while she was confused in the process by geek speak.

once i saw the keychain issue, i just started to log back into everything and saw that keychain was saving my passwords again. everything was back to normal. only now, i have to remember all my damn passwords. i opened up my ftp client and could have cried. all those addresses and passwords lost. now i have to remember them all and find emails with the info for the stuff i volunteer to do. well that will just have to wait. let me first try to remember the domains i own! i couldn't remember one of them. the one i've been too lazy with. the one that has just been sitting there. but good thing i own it 'cos i was able to go in and reset the password without providing the current password. yea me.

then back to the old place to resolve the tower issue. well, despite friend's husband guess, that wasn't the issue. going to the same version of itunes as on the laptop didn't work either. it just doesn't want to load the library on the external drive. refuses to even open itunes when i attempt to do that. i can almost hear it telling me "tough shit". the tower knows it's no longer the media tower so it refuses to support media. i've backed up almost everything and there's still the info on the hard drive. so now i'll have to just plug it into the laptop. the only problem is that the laptop doesn't want to read it either! something about the library file must have corrupted. i have all the music, just no damn working library file. this means that i will have to rebuild my itunes library from scratch. if you have ever seen my playlists, you know what a bitch this will be. but, this is also a good thing. a fresh start in life, new place, new itunes playlists! this also means that all my play counts have been reset to 0. i'll probably end up deleting a bunch of stuff once i start re-listening to everything and re-evaluating.

now i just have to make a copy of all the media onto another drive for my ex- so that they have a copy of all our music and photos. this is one of the major points of modern uncoupling i think. the process of dividing your digital life. meanwhile, what is my ex- doing? out at a club partying her ass off. you dance, i geek. fair trade? c'est la vie.
