february's netflixing [watching]
with all that's going on having calmed down a bit, i was able to watch a couple more discs than last month but i'm not at all back at my regular pace.
"winged migration" - this was a big deal when it came out and everybody said i should watch it. a couple hours on birds. how exciting could that be? seemed like the most boring thing in the world to me at the time. i thought it was following just one flock. but watching this was actually interesting. there were many species. they just show how far birds fly and some things that happen to them along the way. perhaps things one never thought of before.
"down with love" - while clearing out my queue, i almost deleted this one. i think i added it just for ewan mcgregor. but the cover looked cheesy and i couldn't remember anything about the basic plot that would make me want to see it. nothing tempting really. so that's why i almost removed it. however, i decided to bump it up and watch it immediately for a change of pace of my viewing habits. wow. a throwback to the 60s comedy thing that's actually quite charming. if you haven't seen it, give it a try.
"itty bitty titty committee" - the trailer made this film like it could be really exciting and fun but it didn't quite live up to it. i think the soundtrack relies too heavily on kathleen hanna. i just don't get the appeal there, especially after seeing le tigre live. still though, this film has its charm. if you have a little riot grrrl in you, give this film a chance.
"november moon" - lesbian lovers in france, one who is jewish, separated in world war 2 due to nazis taking over. what more could one want? i think this was one of the films i got my hands on just before moving to new zealand and returned it without ever watching it. so it's been long overdue in watching. was it worth it? yeah, it wasn't so bad. it held my interest enough.
"tibet: cry of the snow lion" - documentary on tibet and china. yet fails to mention the most important thing: the dalai lama eats meat. what's up with that? in all seriousness though, as if a buddhist potentially eating one's ancestors was not a serious matter, if you're interested in the subject, check out the film. if you know this subject very well, then perhaps this film is not for you. i was not one who knew a lot so this was like a primer/refresher for me.
"blood diamond" - somehow i thought this would be more about people stealing diamonds up their ass or something. but it was an entertaining action film, if not for the amusement of leonardo dicaprio's accent and lexicon.
"the 11th hour" - going with the leonardo theme and how i'm interesting in global warming, i gave this a shot. wow, lots of good facts but boring presentation. a yawner.
"jools holland: later"
"jools holland: later... even louder"
i got these to watch musical performances of bands i liked as well as check out a few bands who i'm not familiar with. i skipped a lot of performances! the sound quality is really crappy on the show. only a couple performances sounded like they were mic-ed decently.
