i finished reading "dead until dark" by charlaine harris today. we got interested in her southern vampire novels after watching "true blood" over thanksgiving weekend. i wanted to read them until the breakup. but after that i lost my taste for it because i bought the novels for my ex-. she devours books. already 4-5 books into the series by the time i picked up the first one. i was hesitant when i started it but that soon left because the book is just as enjoyable as the show. of course they're different but they're each enjoyable in their own way. it'll be interesting to read the rest of the series so i can see it's true voice rather than the tv influenced version that sticks to me more than the first book. visuals are just a powerful thing that are hard to shake once you see the film version of a book, even if you read the book first. when you watch the film first, it's really hard to shake off that image, at least for me it is.

if you're into vampires, i'd recommend picking up a copy or if you don't like reading, then just watch the show. what i like about this version of a vampire world is that they're living among us and we know. they've "come out of the coffin" and have gained rights like other minorities. they have their own world but some try to live in ours. it can lend to interesting questions and scenarios. what i like about the first book is that it's not just about vampires. there's also a murder mystery. i don't know if each book in the series will each contain it's own other element, a tad of another genre to it besides vampire, but just the vampire line could be interesting enough. the main character is human and dates a vampire. i know that they break up in the series and i'm kinda wondering how it will go on after that. to keep the vampire theme, the main character must still associate with if not continue to date vampires. i don't know how long it will take my lazy ass to complete the series but i'm gonna try.
