christmas in mexico [traveling]
merry christmas! i am in mexico city! right after the camp freddy show i was off on a plane yesterday to mexico to visit my friend sara for winter break. she lives with her husband and cat. the cat is a scaredy cat. he is absolutely afraid of other people. yesterday, the very first day with him, i spoke some japanese to him for fun and he ran away like his tail was on fire. too funny. but later he sneaked and peeked at us on the computer room. sara said that's like a miracle and it means he's curious about me. she has stocked up on some fake meats for me. she's worried since all she eats is exactly what i don't eat, hahahahaaa. anyway, it's very nice of her to do that. yesterday i had molletes for the first time with some of that fake soy meat she got instead of cheese. damn, if i was back home i could slap on same vegan gourmet cheese on it for the complete mollete experience.
this morning sara wanted to go to the place that sells huaraches but they were closed. instead, we ate breakfast at vips. i had a waffle with papaya and orange juice. then we took the metro to the alameda central area and museo franz mayer was closed. so we decided to go to panteón civil de dolores, which i read is the biggest cemetery in mexico. the place was really interesting and had some of the most unique graves i've ever seen. unfortunately i didn't bring my camera with me for today's outing so you'll just have to suffer for the lack of images. after that we went to chapultepec park for more closed museums but la feria was open and people were on the rides. no, we didn't go on the rides. i didn't think places would be open but sara was sure they would be and was surprised and disappointed that the city is on vacation.
back at home, i spent my time reading all of the "sen to chihiro no kami kakushi" (spirited away) comics, which were really just movie stills with comic bubbles. it was really fast reading. i didn't realize how little dialogue the film has. the comics were mostly sounds! just like "whoosh", etc. it's great study material for sounds in japanese. after that i read the first volume of "candy candy" since it's sara's favorite comic and i need to read this to understand sara more, hehehe.
dinner: soy milanesa for tacos.
cat update: he's less afraid and i got to pet him a couple times but only when i was sitting close to sara and he walked by me.
