a day in el centro [traveling]

huaraches

this morning i had a cold bucket cleansing for my shower, brrrr. (one of the challenges of this trip is the water situation in mexico city, or lack of water situation. this means that we are drinking bottled water, pouring water into shallow tubs for washing hands, and yes, there will be cold bucket showers.) today the huaraches place was open so i got to eat there. twiddle thumbs loves huaraches and insisted that i have lots of them while in df. i had it with beans and lettuce. in fact, i had two! then off we were to a couple museums. again to the alameda central area to visit museo franz mayer. they have decorative arts from the 1700s etc. in mexico and europe (paintings, dishes, chests, clocks, catholic mass items, etc.). there was also an exhibition on posters. then we walked down the street and chose to visit the museum of torture exhibit over going to munal. the torture exhibit's signs were in spanish and english so that was very good for me. reading about all the hideous things done in the past, (and some as recently as up to the 1970s and perhaps in some places some forms of these tortures still exist), it was truly horrifying to think that people went through this. what sick minds came up with this shit? damn europeans! ;)

we walked down tacuba street to go to the zocalo. of course we passed by the café de tacuba restaurant, which the band café tacuba is named after. i've always wanted to see this place but now since i don't like the band so much i wasn't as interested. just took a picture of the outside for old time's sake. we went to the zocalo because i wanted to see the ice skating in person and the other winter activities available. this is the second year that they have the ice skating. it's free so there's a long line. you even have to wait to sit in the stands to view the ice skating so i didn't get a nice up close view of mexicans on ice. the other activities that they had were to make a mini "snowman" as well as sliding down a "snowy" hill. we would have went into the palacio nacional but someone didn't have their identification on them (me!).

on the way home, we went to a couple health food stores: nutrisa in el centro by the zocalo and i think super soya closer to sara's home.

dinner: sopes.
