july netflixes [watching]
wow, i must have really been busy this month because i hardly watched anything from netflix. i did actually go out to the movies once too! there are times when i feel like upgrading my netflix plan but since i haven't watched that many movies this summer, maybe i should downgrade instead.
truffaut shorts: antoine & collette/les mistons - i feel like i was ripped off. the disc only contained "les mistons". i didn't see the other short film in the menu, nor was it available on the other side of the dvd, as some dvds are double-sided. "les mistons" was ok but i really feel like i'm missing something by not watching the other film.
twin peaks fire walk with me - i finally got to see the movie after being on the waiting list for so long! hmm, now i understand the poor reviews. this has none of the charm of the tv show. in fact, this feels like a tv show whereas the tv show felt more epic than the small screen. the movie feels like it was shot on video, which turns me off after the rich feel of the tv show. but now my "twin peaks" viewing is complete.
zé do caixão: á meia-noite levarei sua alma (coffin joe: at midnight i'll take your soul) - i finally watched a coffin joe movie. hmm, for some reason i really liked this movie and as a classic horror type person i don't know why i had never seen this before. i could even sort of understand the portuguese! it was much more like spanish. perhaps there is not as much slang or heavy brasilian accent as opposed to films today? whatever the case, i want to see more coffin joe! there were trailers for the other films but there was one in color and that seems too 60s/70s cheese for me. i prefer it sin color.
ciudad dos homens (city of men) - i watched both the tv series and the movie. i was completely hooked on the storyline and characters. this is one part of brasil i do not want to see in person and though i have never lived in such a place, this story felt so real yet entertaining at the same time. it just draws you in. i don't want to gush on it because you really should watch it. it's about two best friends growing up in a favela (slum) in rio. really excellent. i like how the music is mixed throughout the segments and customized to fit the story. i like the juxtaposition of elements. i like the heart-wrenching moments of panic and exaltation. i was sad to have these characters leave me but it ended well. the tv show ended upbeat and you know life can't be like that but it was good to end it smiling. the movie brought it all back down but it's an ending you can life with. right acerola? right laranjinha!
