april netflixes [watching]
here's what i netflixed in april:
saludos amigos / the three caballeros - i had seen "the three caballeros" a long time ago on vhs but i don't think i had ever seen "saludos amigos". these are disney's latin american films. since i'm planning on going to south america this year, i wanted to see this films for a light-hearted nostalgic look at latin america. damn, i think i love jose carioca. i just love trying to sound like him. i find portuguese incredibly difficult to understand... the spelling vs. pronunciation drives me nuts. but i like the way brazilian portuguese sounds. it's very melodic. there is definitely some melody going through their sentences. i can hear it in my head. i'm not much a fan of pato donald but he's tolerable here i guess. how can you not love a disney cartoon when a main character, such a figure as pato donald, drinks straight liquor! it's great! tell me donald, have you ever been to bahia?
megadeth: that one night: live in buenos aires - damn there's a lot of people at the show! i'm not a big fan of megadeth, that's more twiddle thumbs, but they're alright. there's certain songs i prefer and this setlist is not to my liking but it's great to see such a large audience. you can really feel the love the fans have for the music. the non-concert footage was cool because you see that dave mustaine isn't always a prick. he's very nice to some fans hanging outside of the hotel and goes down there with an acoustic guitar for a very intimate performance for the hardcore fans. how special that must have been!
eastern promises - i wasn't really sure what this was about but i've heard some people make references to it. hmmm... it was ok. catch it if it's on tv but don't go out of your way for it. i felt like the film was going to be this big epic thing and was only halfway done. i expected it to be twice as long. seriously. when the film ended i was surprised. i thought we had another 60-90 minutes to go. too bad.
manda bala - oh this one will probably make you cancel your trip to brasil! but damn it's a good one. there's several stories being presented in the documentary and at first you're not sure how in the world it's connected. but slowly the lines between the dots are drawn. it's amazing. sometimes i bitch about absurdities in my country and how i dislike some laws but i'm so glad we don't have some of the laws that plague brasil, namely that you cannot prosecute a politician in office. who's the jerk who came up with that one? obviously a politician. this allows them to commit major sins in office. the guy they focused on, what a brilliant scammer. when he wasn't re-elected and they tried to get him, he still got off due to his powerful friends. but still the police and the prosecutors go on. what else can you do but live your life and try to do good, right? this film to me really opened my eyes as to how pointless fighting government is. i knew that but this was like the final confirmation and it was brilliantly translated by the cop as: "tell me in which country the politicians aren't sons of bitches?". after that, i don't think i could give a fuck about any politician or issue anymore. i know it's pointless. they are all bastards. but i couldn't become a prosecutor. i'm not going to waste my time and cause unnecessary stress. let me just enjoy my life and try to do good.. that is until i get so riled up by something that i change my mind again.
sweeney todd - i had never seen the play before. damn, it takes place in england!??!?! say what?! i thought it was an american thing. what the hell are they singing?!?!!? say what!?!?! thank god for subtitles! this film had the potentials to be good. if someone described it to me in some key words like a tim burton musical with blood and death i'd think, hmm, not bad. but you know what? it wasn't good. no.... it wasn't bad but no it was not good.
twin peaks - oh god .. here it goes.. i am such a fan of pop culture. of tv and movies. and yet, i have never seen "twin peaks". is this not a cardinal sin? hence i tried to rectify it once it became available on dvd and netflix. when the show was popular, that was just when i was living in japan and moving back to america. while in japan, it hadn't reach there yet. it takes awhile, or at least it did then, for afrts (military tv/radio) to broadcast what was current in the states. suffice it to say, i knew it was popular and i knew there was a dead girl named laura palmer and the image of her wrapped in plastic, but i never saw a single second of the show. i probably saw the parody on "saturday night live" because i always watched it back then but i don't remember it. thanks to netflix, i have been hooked on going through all of season 1 and 2 as well as the alternate international version of the pilot episode. i can't believe this show was ever on television. it's just too david lynch weird for tv. it's lynch doing soap opera. it's hilarious! the characters are great but some are annoying. maybe i'll even be the log lady for halloween. now i just need to see the "fire walk with me" movie. hurry up people who are renting it and send it back in so i can watch it!
dune - because these past 2 months have been about david lynch. i never saw "dune" as kid. damn it was boring. there was this one kinda weird quote in the film that i liked, i don't know why, and i looked it up and found out it's not in the book. i think i'd rather read the books but it's a little disappointing that line is not in the book and i can't tackle such a long series right now.
