a scanner darkly [watching]

netflixed "a scanner darkly". this was a film i wanted to see in theaters although i can't tell you why other than philip k. dick wrote it. i never read the book so i can't comment on that at all. the animation was a hybrid type that looked half-drawn and half-real. during the trailers i liked it because it puts you in this head space of the books to some degree as dick books are a head trip. but once i watched the special features and saw how they achieved this, i don't know if i'm a fan. they shot the film and then animated on top of that. that's like painting on top of a photograph. a bit cheating? but the end result of this process was good so i'd be willing to see the same style in other films to come. it kind of matches the avatar graphics that people are using these days where they've drawn over photos of themselves. i read about that kind of style once on a julian opie tutorial.
