bitter sugar [watching]
i netflixed "azucar amarga" (bitter sugar) because someone mentioned it in passing and i had never heard of the film. it's from 1996 and is about people living in modern day cuba. it's in black and white. it's interesting because the protagonist is seemingly the last compañero. throughout the course of the film he starts to see things other than his ideals and love of country. this all unravels out of him falling in love. there's a couple of very anti- moments in the film. the initial interpretation i had of these scenes were that they were anti-communist and anti-fidel. but then my mind quickly saw how this film could be used in just the reverse, as a pro- film. it's all a matter of which way you want to argue. the most important message that i got out of it was the one geared towards those who are living comfortably and have ideals (middle class and higher), that it is very difficult to uphold ideals when one is hungry. that is the gist of the plot. when you are in need of basic things, your ideals go out the window.
