beloved amerikana [watching]
i netflixed "immortal beloved" and "amerikana". "immortal beloved" is that beethoven film starring gary oldman. that's all i knew about it. i didn't know anything about beethoven's life, apart from the deafness of course, so i was completely unaware of his letters left behind to this mysterious lover of his known as immortal beloved. i'm really not into wig historical pieces, even though this isn't quite wig times, (i.e., "amadeus"). it's kinda slow but gary oldman is a good actor so if you give the film time, it becomes something worth watching. though i'm not so sure about the musical interpretations. i think it's a bit taboo to be so literal with such famous pieces. i'll leave it at that.
"amerikana" is something i wanted to see for 2 reasons. 1. it has james duval in it. 2. it's a dogme film. i would like to see all the dogme films possible and this one has finally been released on dvd. all those years of waiting though is never good for any piece of art as nothing can stand up to such anticipation. i noticed a couple dogme rules broken but most if not all dogme films break/bend rules so that's ok. this might be called a roadtrip buddy film. i was curious how that would play out and what possibilities are there to explore in a indie or dogme way. twiddle thumbs was bothered by the simplification of characters. i wouldn't say my thoughts on the film went that deep! or that is to say, the film itself does not get deep enough to warrant deep thoughts. challenging a filmmaker to make a dogme film is exciting. what i have also been sad about is no big hollywood director took on the challenge and really tested his/her creativity. imagine if someone like speilberg went dogme. that is not my personal lament though for i am not a big time filmmaker. i am a netflix subscriber.
