who killed nirvana? [watching]
recent netflixes include music and a documentary. first up, nirvana's "live! tonight! sold out!!". i'd rather watch a music video retrospective along with some sort of bonus interviews or documentary but since that doesn't exist for a lot of bands i like and especially not nirvana, this will have to do. for nirvana, i think there's an abundance of unofficial hype available but little official stuff from the band. this dvd wasn't that great. if you're already a big fan, then you'll probably like it. kurt was very kurt in this dvd if you know what i mean. it made me laugh and like him more. it made twiddle thumbs hate him. most of all though, it just made me wonder what popular music would have been like if certain things went a different way. what if jane's addiction never broke up and put out another album after ritual, perhaps in 1991 or 1992. would it have been a battle of nirvana vs. jane's addiction? what would the face of alternative music been like? or what if kurt never killed himself? what if he just tried and failed or stayed on drugs? what would their music have been like and how would popular rock music have been shaped? or imagine a sober cobain in his 40s. these are difficult questions and mere fantasies. better to learn music yourself and make your own art!
the documentary we watched was "who killed the electric car?". if you are into any sort of alternative transportation out there other than a 100% gasoline personal automobile then i would recommend this documentary. this film doesn't look at electric cars in general but very specifically at a car that came onto the market in the 1990s and was gone by the 2000s. the car in question is the ev1 made by general motors. the film shows how it came about, what people who drove it thought of it, and then the demise of the car and hypothesizes what caused the demise. it's a story with many layers but if you care about alternatives then this film will make you angry because every reason why the car was taken off the market seems like a bullshit excuse. the car was never mass-marketed. there was never a big hype for it across the nation to create a demand. hence, the company claims there was no demand and it wasn't profitable. anyone who knows anything about capitalism and sales is that you create the hype, the demand, and give every reason to potential buyers about why they want and need the product. the company seemed to do the very opposite. in fact, it seemed like they didn't want anyone interested. it seems like they wanted it to fail so that they could say they tried to make an electric vehicle but it failed so we have to stick with gas for now and seek other alternatives. another excuse was the car won't do well in cold weather which is why it was sold in california and arizona only. the documentary then shows electric vehicles operating in europe and in snow. whatever, we know alternatives exist but the man keeps us down!
