thank you for smoking marie antoinette [watching]
i'm starting to think i'm the only one who appreciates my movie entries where i combine the titles to create something new and funny. but that's probably because i'm the only one reading my own blog. 'thank you for smoking marie antoinette' has a couple different meanings. it could be thanking her for smoking. it could be thanking someone for killing her. etc. anyway so i netflixed those two films and here's my take on them.
for "marie antoinette", i had seen the trailer in theaters. i was intrigued and excited by the use of 80s new wave music. i'm sure a lot of people did and that was their motivation to see the film. i liked the juxtaposition of a historic picture with modern music that is at the same time nostalgic. i also heard a siouxsie song was used in the movie so i was excited about that. the film was pretty much gorgeous. very lush. i really hate that period. don't like wigs and excess. but this was watchable. i don't like sophia coppola's films so far but this was the best so far. however, it's still about nothing. it did get me interested for the first time in actually reading up on marie antoinette a little bit so if that was the point of the film then mission accomplished.
i knew nothing about "thank you for smoking". the title was so hilarious that i wanted to see it, plain and simple. turns out it's a really good, funny film. the main character is a lobbyist for big tobacco. to watch all the bullshit this guy does. well, that's exactly where i work, with salesmen! sales is all about talking fast and convincing people within seconds. i wonder if i had seen this film before i had this job if i would have enjoyed it as much. probably because like i said, it's a funny film regardless. the only thing that didn't quite work for me was rob lowe in a kimono (overboard) and the part of heather being played by katie holmes. she just wasn't the right person for the job.
