secret sleepy chiefs [listening]
last night i went with nopalita to see sleepytime gorilla museum and secret chiefs 3. originally i was supposed to go with twiddle thumbs but she's been in tijuana this week and wouldn't be back in time to go. we were going to go so that our old new zealand flatmate could vicariously be there as these are the bands he loves. i have heard some of the music by these groups because of him, otherwise i would have probably never bothered to try them out. i had known the name of secret chiefs 3 just because of all the bands associated with mike patton, though i'm not a fan. however, i had never heard of sleepytime gorilla museum before befriending this particular kiwi.
the show was at the el rey theatre, which i've never been to before so i was glad to go to this show. we got there and had to wait outside as the box office people were slow to open it up. one of the staff members was a little nazi that made us laugh. she kept yelling at us to stand in single file, no gum chewing, etc. we get inside the venue and it's nice. we get right in front of the stage just behind some people (second row) so we could get a good view and really absorb ourselves in the music. secret chiefs 3 weren't bad but the songs were so damn long and repetitive. they played a couple instruments i have never seen before and have no idea what they are called but they sounded nice.
after their set, some people in front of us left so we took their spot right in front of the stage (first row). i got to say that while the idea of sleepytime gorilla museum is interesting (making your own instruments, creating your own costumes and such), the music was truly sleepy. i was tired, my feet didn't want to support me standing much longer. after a few songs i got text messages from twiddle thumbs saying that she was back home in LA and that is when i decided to leave. it just wasn't my thing. i got a shirt for my friend and we left. i'm curious to hear the secret chief albums i haven't heard but sleepytime isn't my thing.
