lala trades review 5 [listening]
here's my thoughts on recent acquisitions.
soulfly - "dark ages". wow, finally a good soulfly album! it kinda sounds like sepultura. max has gotten off the "roots" path that soulfly has been stuck on for several albums and finally woke up and realized that he should be doing heavy-hitting metal. it's not great, but it is such a good improvement. it makes me want to hear what else soulfly is capable of and to see them live. it sparks an interest again. just when i was going to completely write them off and forget about soufly.
"gling-glo". this is the album bjork did way back when. it's jazzy. it's in icelandic. it sounds like the swedish chef singing jazzy christmas songs or bossa nova disney songs or something. sorry but it just sounds kinda funny to me to hear the language because bjork is so happy and energetic throughout. but the music is good. the singing is good. i like it. i have to hear it more to get over my initial listen giggles.
wendy carlos - "secrets of synthesis". it's like listening to wendy give a electronic music history lecture based on her own works and evolution of the technology and genre. it's great! unfortunately i don't think any of my friends appreciate this kind of stuff. therefore this is just a little gem for me to enjoy.
cure - "boys don't cry", "kiss me kiss me kiss me". i've been trying to get all the cure albums, or at least through the 80s, to give their discography a fair chance and see what non-single tracks i like. it's hard though as i'm not really into them. it's not that i'm anti-cure because i'm a siouxsie fan, i just genuinely am not that interested in their catalogue overall. i like the hits and a couple non-single tracks, but not enough to become that engaged with their entire discography. mostly it seems to be forgettable pop and robert's voice tires after awhile. i mean, i never say "let's listen to the cure". that's very rare. mostly that's twiddle thumbs. but's she's a happy bubble gum type character so i see why she'd like the cure.
depeche mode - "music for the masses", "a broken frame". more crap from a group twiddle thumbs likes. what is there for me to really say? i'm trying to get all their albums for her even though i'm not sure she'll like the non-single tracks. i really only like the singles. while i could name a couple non-single cure tracks off the bat that i like, i can't name a any non-single depeche mode tracks that i like.
