chinese food, an irish pub, and latino morrisseys [living]
here's this year's st. patrick's day adventure. last year we didn't do anything. this time, we got together with a couple friends and had dinner at p.f. chang's, followed by going to an irish pub. we had to wait over an hour to get into the pub but the line was much worse when we left. it cost $5 to get in. i'm not sure how long we stayed. 1 hour? 1.5 hours? not very long. i didn't drink at the pub. i'm the driver. anyway, as it expected the crowd was very young and white. it was like some frat party.
then we went home for a few minutes before heading off to an 80s club in the nearby suburbs that we had been to before. tonight there was a band covering smiths/morrissey. what alpha tom was shocked at was that it was basically a club full of mexicans. not that they were mexican per se, but that the morrissey cover band were latino and the hispanic crowd all sang along to "this charming man". i guess for him, coming from the commonwealth, the smiths is just a white thing. music transcends countries and cultures. and in LA, with our mixed population, there is a huge crowd of latino morrissey lovers that he apparently didn't know existed. personally, i was surprised at how many people knew the words to "this charming man", but apparently no other smiths/morrissey song?!?! not even a chorus? the band wasn't that good either. that band in wellington rocked! probably the best or definitely one of the top smiths cover bands around, or that were since we went to their last show.
