lala trades review 3 [listening]
music reviews continued.
electronic - "electronic", "raise the pressure", "twisted tenderness". as i mentioned, i have been listening to post-smiths marr work and i've heard the electronic albums. it's so blatantly obvious to say but if you're into pet shop boys type electronica taken a slightly different path, then this stuff is for you. i haven't listened to these albums enough to really talk about each one individually, but overall it's ok. as with all electronica though, the tracks are a bit long for me. best for background music i guess.
pj harvey - "is this desire?", "stories from the city, stories from the sea", "uh huh her". when pj harvey first broke with "sheela-na-gig", i was into it. i watched her perform on tv and give interviews including a duet with bjork before i was really into bjork as a solo artist. i heard her first two albums from a roommate but didn't buy them for myself until much later. at the time "to bring you my love", i would watch the music video on tv and then someone gave me the album. it was quite different but i liked it. as i listen to these more recent albums from pj harvey, she's matured and strayed from the early approach but that's to be expected. what i didn't expect was to like these songs so much. there are times when i don't like pj harvey, but when the mood is right, i really get into them. these are albums i definitely need to listen to a lot more often in order to figure out which songs i like and what is so great about them, in essence the essence of pj harvey.
therapy? - "shameless". sadly, i cannot say the same things i did about pj harvey when talking about therapy?. i have long owned and loved 2 albums by therapy?, causing me to think they are wonderful. i've been trying to acquire their back catalogue in order to discover other gems but i cannot find any. it's really such a shame.
banyan - "live at perkins' palace". banyan is just one of those bands you have to see live. a great jam band. constantly i feel that their albums fail to capture that wonderment one experiences when seeing them live. i am so glad i had such an opportunity. otherwise, i wouldn't think much of them from the albums. however, it could be that i had such a great experience live that i set such high expectations from their albums.
razed in black - "sacrificed". there was a point in my life when i was heading towards industrial, thinking it was great music in the room next door of the goth clubs i would go to. also great for driving and when you're angry. the only thing is i never really bought much of it or what i bought i never got into all the way. the fancy was fleeting. i feel the same way about this album. i think time has moved on for me. there are still some industrial type albums and artists i want to try out but largely i think those days are done for me.
