sepultura in long beach [listening]
tonight we went to see sepultura in at the vault 350 in long beach. i was looking forward to this show for two reasons. first of all, to see sepultura in my 'hometown' and secondly, i have never been to this venue. when we got there, the place was empty. we arrived shortly after the time posted that doors would be open, but we had already missed one band for sure, ankla, who we were looking forward to see play again. the other bands sounded better tonight than last night. perhaps it is because i am a little familiar with their songs now. sworn enemy especially sounded a lot better. after the show, we even bought a diecast cd.
the venue never got packed. twiddle thumbs and i were trying to figure out why that was so. has sepultura really become that unpopular over the years or was it due to igor's departure? again there were people who didn't know igor left so it can't be that. perhaps it was because the original date was changed. we wondered how many people went to pomona tonight only to find out the show had been canceled. those who weren't there, i'm sorry but you missed a historic night in metal. it is too unbelievable. there was a barrier but no security guards. i have never seen such a thing. even though there was no guard in front of me, at times i was still hesistant to openly take photos. several people from the opening bands would walk inbetween the stage and barrier to take photos freely. one groupie (or something like that) lingered too long and it did catch the attention of the guards so that was the only time someone came by. i think someone got a little rowdy by my side and so at one point i could see there was a guard watching the crowd but no one ever 'protected' the stage. with the larger stage and the barrier, there was a greater distance between me and the band than last night. plus they used fog machines so a lot of my pictures did not turn out well. oh well, one must make compromises and you can't have things go completely your way every time.
the setlist was pretty much the same as last night. except, tonight was the last night of the tour so everyone gave it their all. there were several guest appearances by members of the opening bands. for kaiowas, they brought out the drums and every drummer came out on stage to play. derrick said that was the only night they brought out the drums for kaiowas. for the very last song, everyone and their mother came out on stage. it was a very cool night.
after the show, we hung out a bit to get our records signed. we only got to meet derrick. he was as nice as ever. twiddle thumbs finally got to talk to him about being a vegetarian so she was happy. although she always wonders why people can't take the next step and stop eating animal products altogether. we hung out a bit to meet the rest but it was just so damn cold and twiddle thumbs's still sick so we went home. it was the last night of the tour. i'm sure they drank backstage for hours.
