merry movies [watching]

this christmas we just stayed home watching movies, never left the house. we watched movies nopalita let us borrow. curiously enough, all of these had been in my netflix queue.

bride and prejudice - nopalita actually gave this one to us because she disliked it so much. we gulped. it must be bad...no, it was good! you have to have already a certain sense to appreciate it perhaps. it's a musical. it's a comedy. don't take it seriously. perhaps it was precisely because we didn't think it would be good that it was good. we didn't have any expectations. i was just curious to see what it was like because of the director because she also made "bend it like beckham". not bad. perhaps i should watch her earlier works too.

garden state - i knew nothing of the plot. i had just heard a few good words and that it was written/directed by that guy on "scrubs". i thought, hmm, a television actor made a movie? i gotta see this. this was a really good movie. i don't know why, perhaps it was just the right movie at the right time. natalie portman is absolutely adorable in this. very full of life.

smoke signals - i remember back when this came out that people spoke well of it. well, i finally got around to seeing it. it was probably the worst of the three we watched. it wasn't bad, just not great. it's not something you have to rush out to see. twiddle thumbs was really annoyed with the way one character spoke. i didn't mind it so much but after awhile, you end up talking like him too.
