nightmare before christmas 3-d [watching]
we went to see "the nightmare before christmas" which has been remastered and is now showing in 3-d. 3-d is one of those gimmicks from the 1950s that is somehow still around. (why smell-o-vision didn't last i'll never know.) the idea back then was to create ways to lure people back to the movie theaters as attendance dropped due to the invention and popularization of the television set. these days, people never need leave their living room for entertainment due to all the varities of mind-numbing things that exist out there. hence, once again it seems that 3-d is being used to bring people back to the movies, but this time the technology is being applied to old crap!
i was never into "the nightmare before christmas" movie. the first time i saw it, it was too boring. this time it was a little better, but still...i just am not into it. i much prefer all the merchandising associated with the film characters. this 3-d version suffers the same flaw as the other movie we went to see in 3-d in theaters, "monster house". the problem is that these films were not created with 3-d in mind. there is nothing that pops out at you to surprise, awe, or scare you. to me, that is the point of 3-d. the purpose of 3-d in films that become enhanced with 3-d seems to only be to add a bit of dimension to the film. sadly, it is not an enhancement. "captain eo", not that's a 3-d film! it was a short shown at disneyland. it made people reach out for the characters, duck, etc. in short, the audience interacted with the film! i think an interesting future use of 3-d would be to make the audience feel as part of the film, as if they were in the world of the film itself and were observers. instead of the current way of voyuerism that is experienced by watching a projected image. perhaps even a 360 degree screen? again, think of disneyland and that old theater they would show nature films on.
