my only culture at the rainbow room [listening]
so last night was the big show for twiddle thumbs. instead of a rushed 2 songs at a coffee house, they had a more proper show at the rainbow room on sunset. you probably know it as the rainbow bar and grill but LA people just call it the rainbow room. i had never been inside before and i thought they just served food but it turns out that there's a small space on the second floor that local acts play at so i still haven't been inside the restaurant proper. we rushed after work to get there and traffic was so fucking bad, unbelievable! the entire show got backlogged about an hour which was good 'cos otherwise our audience would have been half the size it was--twiddle thumbs's family of 3 members showed up just when the set started and there was only 3 of us to cheer the band on. it's one of those things were once your friends play, you leave. so at the beginning of the show the audience is huge but by the time my only culture went on, there were only a few.
i was twiddle thumbs's roadie and i recorded the show with the mini disc recorder. i was such a professional roadie too! i even walked around with a roll of black tape on my arm which i used to tape down the setlist. i don't think anyone else who played had a setlist. they would just decide on the spot and that got boring at times because the songs weren't performed back to back. my only culture sounded good overall except for some technical difficulties with josh's amp during "blackmail" and some minor mistakes in 1 or 2 songs by each member, though i'm sure no one would have realized had not each of them made funny faces when they made their mistakes! probably their song that is the most friendly to play is their cover of "otherside" because they do such a good job and most are familiar with it. for their originals, it's hard for me to say which is the most friendly. it really depends on my mood, i suppose. i love the melancholy of "blackmail", the intensity of "estrogen", and the gentleness of "look". however, for some reason i tend to get "bleed from the sky" stuck in my head.
setlist:
tangerine (cover of led zeppelin)
overrated
blackmail
estrogen
bleed from the sky
otherside (cover of red hot chili peppers)
