netflixiation [watching]

it's time to write about some of the movies i've been netflixing as it's been so long since i have done so!

the best of triumph the insult comic dog
this was hilarious! i forgot how funny triumph could be. he's that plastic dog puppet from "late night with conan o'brien". i'm not sure if the disc is a best of so much as a compilation of all his appearances on late night. i used to watch the show and loved triumph but i actually don't remember any of the bits on the disc! it was great fun...for me to poop on!

the pianist
i didn't want to watch this one. i didn't want to like this one. it's a personal thing i have against someone who dated someone in the film. well it's just stupid and i don't want to go into it. time has moved on so i can let go of those old days and watch this movie. it was pretty good. but then you sit back later and soak it all in and it was a great movie. i don't know enough of roman polanski's works but this is definitely his masterpiece, though i wish it weren't for some reason. this is polanski's personal piece, due to his own connections to the time and main character. i just would like masterpieces to be completely original is all and this is a biographical film. there's nothing wrong with that, it's just my own personal aesthetic.

james and the giant peach
this is that famous animation piece, or so that's my association with the title. i started watching it and it's got regular actors. what the hell? i thought this was animated! i knew nothing of the story beforehand. turns out, the beginning and ending of the film is live action but the rest is animated. hmmm...i didn't care much for the story. or the film for that matter. it was just, boring, for lack of a better word. maybe if i saw this when i was 7 i would have a different opinion.

particles of truth
i had been looking forward to this movie because gale harold is in it. he's that hot guy from "queer as folk". i think he pulls off the character of brian kinney very well. so much so i am considering him for the lead role in my remake of "the fountainhead" that i will film one day in my dreams. then i watched "particles of truth" and what a piece of crap. the truth revealed was that perhaps gale isn't so much a good actor as the character of brian is well-written to suit my tastes and how much acting skills does it take to play a self-absorbed, drug taking, alcoholic chicken hawk? i don't know. i need to see more movies with gale harold. perhaps my search for howard roark shall continue longer. i just can't think of anyone with the skills to play him. by the time i find him though maybe i will actually be in a position to make "the fountainhead". aaahahaahaaaa

stuart saves his family
i confess that i got this one to help me knock a few more off the list of snl movies out there on listsofbests.com. i've seen several of the movies based off of skits in the 90s such as "wayne's world" and "the coneheads" but i never saw the stuart smalley movie. damn, if it ain't the book come to life! it's called "i'm good enough, i'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me! daily affirmations with stuart smalley" and i rented it from the library but never finished it. it's a journal style book. it takes a look at a year in the life of stuart. i think it's funnier than the movie but it's faster to watch the movie. your pick if you're interested otherwise don't bother with this one.

broken flowers
i have an aunt who has seen every movie out there and if she hasn't seen it then it's in her netflix queue--a whopping 34 or something like that whereas my queue is permanently full at 500. this is the only film she has netflix recommended that i have actually netflixed. why? because netflix users gave it decent ratings. then i watched it. god...another bill murray film for the middle aged. sorry to all that love it but that's what it is. i'm still too young to watch this and i hope i never get into a state of being where i enjoy bill muray films for the middle aged. if i don't outlive my father than i never will, so that's one bright side to that! if i do outlive my father than i'm throwing a 'i outlived my father' party. yes, my aunt knows about this and thinks it's funny too. those who understand me will think it's funny. p.s. my dad died when he was young. whenever it's someone's birthday and they're so happy about it and i find out they just turned the age my dad was when he died i like to rain on their parade by talking about how my dad died at that age. happy birthday! boy are my friends are getting old. they have almost reached that age!

the libertine
crap! avoid this one. i still don't get the johnny depp thing that all these women have. i haven't understood it since "21 jump street"! all those women are now middle aged. i bet they enjoy bill murray films for the middle aged.

2 films: that darn cat and the black hole
these 2 are disney films from way back when disney still made classic films for families and not the crap they put out now. i confess that again i netflixed these in order to help knock out a few from a disney flim list on listsofbests.com. also, it's part of my ongoing mission to have twiddle thumbs watch the disney classics. for the first time though, i presented disney films that i have not seen. "that darn cat" wasn't so bad. not that interesting but not terrible. "the black hole" however was crap. that's one that was burned into my mind as a classic disney film i have to see one day but now that i have seen it i don't know where i ever got the idea that classic = good! classic definitely does not equate to good in this case.
