superman left? [watching]
i really had no interest in "superman returns" because i thought it was a remake of the christopher reeves series of superman movies and who needs that? but you know what? tomorrow is a holiday and i wanna go out and watch a fucking movie! superman was the only movie playing constantly and next to the competition, it seemed like a good choice so we fucking saw "superman returns". and you know what else? it's not so bad. it's not a remake. it's like a continuation, hence 'returns', however, it's more like, superman left? when did he leave? they start off the film with the basics like letting you know that superman left for 5 years. the thing about touching a classic though is that you always have to outdo the former in some way. these days it means bigger budgets for action and special effects. that doesn't necessarily make for a better film. in fact, to me it never does. i won't reveal what the kicker is for this film but it has to do with the romantic relationship between clark kent, lois lane, and superman. it's just something that the various takes on superman have attempted to do in various ways but i think this one goes there a bit further and shows the human side to superman, if 'human' can be used in this case.
there's some throwback homages to the c. reeves series of superman films but otherwise i think you could take this new film on its own and call it good. a couple lines of dialogue made me cringe because it was just too cheesy but there were just as many witty and enjoyable scenes. the casting for superman was good. he's a dark haired, handsome guy. that's all superman really needs. in addition, he feels like clark kent so good job there. lois lane? blah! i don't know if anyone can get her right. maybe the c. reeves series did. jimmy olsen is jimmy olsen, not much needed there. and does anyone really care about who plays mr. white? i don't think so. the important thing is the main hero and the main villain and let me tell you, kevin spacey is delicious as lex luthor. i also liked parker posey as his girl, much better than the previous from way back when. i have the old film series box set on dvd but i haven't actually watched the films in years. let's just hope that this new ensemble of the superman team can create equally entertaining sequels.
