the new and the dead [living]
a co-worker gave is two week notice today and recommended me for the position. i was starting to get excited over this, at the possibility of doing something different and making more money (if they offer i won't accept w/o appropriate monetary compensation), when i received an email from a fellow ucsc alumn: the ucsc chancellor is dead. this person became chancellor shortly after i left santa cruz but still, it's shocking. she jumped from her apartment building while her girlfriend was out of town. *splat* that's it. some end. how would you like to come home to that? it just goes to show you that everyone has problems. you can have a pretty high up job, make good money and have benefits, be respected in your field, be in a relationship, but all that doesn't matter if you've got problems that overwhelm you. i know that all chancellors at ucsc face scrutiny and rightfully so, anyone that high up is going to be under the microscope, but this chancellor has had it particularly bad i think in a way that ucsc hasn't seen probably since the days of the students protesting dr. thimann (which was undeserved in my humble opinion). i wonder if those people who harassed the chancellor feel any regret or shame for what they did. all that said, no dogs on campus!!! and it wasn't just the chancellor. you know who you are.
i've been reading the news articles and it's pretty weird to read so many quotes from people i used to work with. twiddle thumbs called her old boss who said things are crazy right now.
