united 93 [watching]
unlike other americans that i have heard about, i don't think it's too soon to make a movie about 9/11/01. there's even polls going around about it. maybe it's to hype up the release of "united 93" but damn, americans are too fucking sensitive! the day it happened, yeah, i was bothered by it. i went to work and everyone around me acted like nothing happened and i wanted to freak out. don't you understand what fucking happened?! what's going on?! i was glued to cnn.com at work and then i was glued to cnn at home. but the next day i was over it. i had processed it. then it seemed like it finally hit everyone. people around me probably thought i was being insensitive but i just processed that event a lot faster than others did. maybe it's because i didn't lose anyone but fuck man, it's not like i'm a total bastard. i've been to the world trade towers, i want to go to washington dc, i know people who were flying that day, even someone who was flying out of boston. but i didn't lose anyone and i don't live on that side of the country. maybe i am too far removed. but i really think it's just me. we all process things at our own pace. for example, there was a tragedy in the local area in the 1980s. i have a friend who's still processing that and they didn't lose anyone. personally, i think many would be over it by now. my point is this: i just feel like americans have been fucking hyper sensitive ever since 9/11/01.
i wanted to like "united 93" but it sucked. it sucked like "the blair witch project" sucked. the camera work was so handheld shakey that it gave me motion sickness. i knew i was in trouble after watching 10 minutes of it. i noticed that there were many quick pans and movements that were not completely in focus. too much motion and too much blur. no one really knows the story of what went on during that flight. we have only the rumors and speculation. we all know what those are so i do not need to repeat. writers should be more clever than that. i really do not think this film added anything to help paint a picture of that day or to understand it in a greater sense.
we watched "hamburg cell" at a film festival in new zealand and that was done so well. it wasn't about a specific flight. it was about the events leading up to the day of the hijackings. perhaps it's unfair to compare the two films but it is natural for me. one of the films made me think. one of the films made me sick, literally. i had to close my eyes, look away and focus on the house lights, even leave the theater at one point. i could feel my nice dinner coming back up to speak to me. when the passengers started to drink water, i wished they would pass me a bottle. for anyone yet to see this film, you have been warned.
