aeon flux [watching]

netflixed "aeon flux". hmm. mixed feelings. i didn't think it would be a good movie and i was right but somehow wrong. (charlize theron as aeon flux? please people.) i really liked "aeon flux" when it was tiny pieces as part of mtv's "liquid television" thing. but then the characters started talking and it seemed wrong so i stopped watching. (is this how people felt when talkies were invented?) i liked the silent contemplation of the drawings and characters. kinda like how spiderman doesn't talk in the "electric company" rendition. to make a full length motion picture, the filmmakers decided naturally to go with the talking version of "aeon flux".

let's look past the narrative. let's look past the characters. let's look past the actors. what are we left with? gorgeous locations! it really is a treat for the eyes. i didn't think about it much until i watched the special features on the dvd. the filmmakers started talking about where to film it. they were scoping out brasilia. wow!, i must go to brasilia! then they said it wouldn't work in brazil so they thought hard about another possible city and then the answer became obvious: berlin. hot damn!, i must go to berlin! that's a city i've always wanted to see, being a child of the cold war. but now that i've seen the beauty of some of the architecture there, i really have to go. the problem is: this is the film presentation of certain parts of the city. it's not like berlin really resembles the world of aeon flux. rather, they took little bits here and there and sprinkled some movie magic to create my lovely dystopia. still though, brownie points for berlin. it moves up the urgency to see it a couple notches.
