4 films from the 30s [watching]
the other day i picked up the marlene dietrich glamour collection dvd set as well as the carole lombard glamour collection dvd set. to get so many films on dvd cheap (5-6 for $18.99) is worth it despite the lack of bonus materials that more current films offer. historically, people didn't think about all the bonus dvd features when they were making movies! the more that time passes on, the more we lose film history and so it's time to put everything in the vaults on dvd! these glamour collection dvds are bare bones. 2 movies cramped on 1 side of a dual disc. i don't care about not even having a little bio or photo gallery of the star on the discs. we have the internet for that. research yourself! before the internet, there were these things called books which were in libraries. that's where i learned all about film and music and anything else i wanted to learn about back in the day. which only leaves me room to bitch about this one point: why have only 1 film on some of the discs when you can cramp in another? it should've been 6-8 films for $19.99. the outermost packing is kinda cool and it attracted me to the boxes right away. i might have even read somewhere that this is the first time that many of these films in the glamour collection are being put on dvd. there's also a mae west glamour collection but i haven't gotten into her films yet. first i must catch up on what i already like!
i spent my time after work watching 4 films! hey, movies were short back then. the first one i watched was from the marlene dietrich collection. it was "the devil is a woman". this is dietrich's personal favorite. she prefers however the original title of "the spanish dancer". i think it's also called "spanish caprice" or that was the original title of the source novel or music. anyway, it was her favorite and i wasn't sure if i've ever seen it so i had to see that one first. as i watched the film it seemed a bit familiar so i've either seen it before or i've seen so many damn film stills that i feel like i know this movie. i was a bit surprised to see cesar romero in the film. (i forget everyone but dietrich, hehehee) it always shocks me to see him so young and handsome. i'm one of those kids that knows him as the joker and his other tv guest appearances. the other films in the collection i know i have seen but i don't think i have any of them on dvd. maybe just 1 at best. the other films are "morocco" (it has that famous kiss scene), "blonde venus" (it's a must see), "flame of new orleans" (perhaps not the best but i like it enough), and "golden earrings" (this is a pretty good one).
after dietrich, it was lombard's turn. i haven't seen too many of her films and i've actually never seen any in this collection. i watched "love before breakfast", "the princess comes across", and "man of the world". cesar romero is also in "love before breakfast"! i felt like i was watching the cesar romero collection! let's see, that means he's been in a film with both dietrich and lombard. lucky. another lucky man is jimmy stewart for being in films with dietrich and kim novak. but i digress. lombard plays a swedish princess in "the princess comes across". she's not really a princess, just pretending to be. damn, it made me laugh. she's doing garbo! "man of the world" is sweet because it stars william powell who as everybody film buffs know was once married to lombard. you can see the love between them and the power of powell as an actor.

yeah, i know. people probably don't know this since they weren't in any films together but they worked at the same studio and were backlot friends.
