last night we went to go see buckethead at the coach house in san juan capistrano. when buckethead's tour dates were announced, there wasn't a LA date and san juan capistrano is not that far so i bought tickets. besides, in high school i always heard of shows at the coach house so i wanted to check it out. of course, after buying the tickets, the LA show was announced--at another venue i have never been to. that show was the night before san juan capistrano, on friday night, and i didn't feel like driving out to hollywood that night so i didn't feel bad about going...until i read reviews of the show! serj was a special guest. goddamnit...

the coach house is a different kind of venue. it's all sit down and you can order food. that's right, you can watch your favorite band as a dinner show. bizarre but good for those over 30. hahahahha. anyway, that 1 guy opened up the show. that 1 guy is an interesting performance. it's just 1 guy, hence the name. he plays his own modified instrument. it's a couple of pipes put together with a string and triggers connected to samples. so you play it like 2 upright basses fused together and hit the triggers located at the top and bottom. he also uses a drum stick and bow on the string, plus he had a little drum kit and i think a trigger at his feet (bass drum?). if you just listen to the music, you will not get it. it's really something you have to see to appreciate. he's just so san francisco/santa cruz. very cool. it inspires the electronic musician dropout in me to go and make my own instruments.

buckethead? rocked as always. only 1 drummer and 1 bassist to back him up. very stripped down. he did a little robot dance. he did a little nunchaku. he did a little toy giving. it was the first time i've seen buckethead do an intermission though. at the end, i took a picture of a setlist this other guy got from the staff. lucky. but of course the very next thing to happen was that i also got my own setlist from the staff. thank you!!!
