aterciopelados at the grove in anaheim [listening]

we just got back from seeing aterciopelados at the grove in anaheim. yea, another venue that i have not been to! (it was bigger than i thought it would be.) enanitos verdes was listed as opening up for them. at least, the show was being sold as an aterciopelados show, which means they are headlining. however, aterciopelados opened up! this was actually a blessing because enanitos verdes pretty much sucks and since i'm sick i wasn't kept out late. (we went with nopalita who likes enanitos verdes and if she walked out, that tells you something about the quality of their music.)

aterciopelados

this was the first time we have seen aterciopelados without alejandro the guitarist. he had been with them a long time and i think he was a vital part of their sound. he played very smooth, what i would call beatles guitar. this is the first time we've seen aterciopelados without him. they still sound good. the new guy is good, but you can tell he's a little bit of that typical rock guitarist who wants to bust out with a solo. i'm glad he restrained himself for the show and for the sake of the music. the arrangement of the songs were the same as when we saw them last year: the traditional colombian flute during "el estuche" and the drummer playing tablas during several songs.

perhaps others out there were surprised that aterciopelados opened for they made a commotion for an encore. it was the quickest return to the stage i have ever seen and only perhaps the second or third time i have seen an opening band do an encore. funny, i think they have all been rock en español shows!

setlist:
la pipa de la paz
luz azul
el estuche
menos mal
maligno
lactochampeta
el album
a eme o
baracunatana
amortiguador
baby blues
bolero falaz
ojala... (cover song)
candela

encore:
rompecabezas
florecita rockera
