argentine tango [watching]
i went to see "forever tango" at the cerritos performing arts center. i went with my mother. i was her backup date. her boyfriend is out of town. i haven't been to the cerritos performing arts center since shortly after it opened when i was in high school. things don't change. it's patrons are still really old snobs who wear fur. the tango performance was a bit of déjà vu but i don't know exactly how. i'm not sure if this is the same tango troupe i went to see with my mother in new york in 1999 (doubt it) or the musician setup for all tango troupes are the same. i can't recall the musician setup for the show we went to in 1999 at all but the setup tonight was more than familiar. perhaps i've seen tango on tv and it had the same 4 accordion players in front configuration. regardless, all the music blended together so seamlessly and repetitively that it was almost like they only played 2-3 songs all night when they probably played upwards of 20 songs. this comment is both positive and negative. i like it when a theme is carried throughout over various songs such as motifs in classical movements because that's just not done often these days. the downside to this musical choice is that repetition leads to boredom. the focus of the audience is supposed to be on the dancers, but dancing isn't really my thing and i was paying more attention to the music. the musicians were really good though and i tried to pay more attention to the bass's role but i couldn't help but notice one accordion player who seemed to bored with the whole thing. the rebel tango musician! for the dancing i will say however that i enjoyed one couple who incorporated comedy into their dance. i do like tango and especially argentine tango because it is so flamboyant and floating by on wheels instead of legs quality but i never realized that tango could be comical.
