touched by the hand of buddha [living]
lately we've been on the hunt for dominique bananas and buddha hands (fingered citron). why you ask? well i'll tell a little story but hide the names to protect the innocent and stupid. one day while shopping at wild oats, our favorite supermarket, in the bananas section we see the tags listing the names and prices of the various bananas. however, one sticks out to us: dominique bananas. but there's no dominique bananas. we take a picture of the tag for our friend. each time we shop, there's the damn tag but no dominique bananas. i joke to our friend that i'm going to find those damn bananas and tell them what they taste like.
once again today we went to shop at wild oats and there was the tag but no bananas. instead of being pissed, we noticed a different fruit in stock for the first time, much to twiddle thumbs's delight: buddha hands. there are only 3 of them. we ask the produce boy how much they are. he jokes they are free. he calls them mutant lemons. apparently they ordered lemons but were shipped the buddha hands instead. we grab only 1 buddha hand because even though there is no price we do know that they are very expensive because twiddle thumbs used to work for a company where they would sell them for at least $7 each. we get to the checkout stand and the clerk l is laughing her ass off because she has never seen a buddha hand before. she shows it off to the bag girl who is also freaked out by it. l cannot find the price for it. she calls up produce boy and he tells her to charge the price of lemons. at first she punches in the lemon price, but then he tells her $0.79, which is the more expensive price for organic lemons. twiddle thumbs seizes the opportunity and asks to buy all the buddha hands they have. so we walk out of there with 3 buddha hands for less than $3. sweet.
twiddle thumbs has been wanting to find buddha hands ever since she worked at that place that sold them and i didn't know what the big deal is. they look interesting and are supposed to smell good. so what? now we have some. damn, if they don't smell so good. i looked them up on the net and descriptions say that they have long been used in china and japan for their fragrance. i showed the buddha hands to my mom and she's never heard of them. she was so amazed by them, we gave her one. i gotta find out the name for them in japanese.
