open house [watching]
"open house" is a disc i've been holding onto from netflix forever. i saw the dvd extra features before i watched the film itself. it's a musical comedy about real estate. that alone would probably get me to watch it but i got it of course because james duval is in it. i really wanted to like it because there's just not enough musicals these days and there's nothing like a good musical. this film seemed a tad too long and overall, the background behind it seemed more interesting than the film itself. you should watch the featurette on how director dan mirvish worked hard to do an impossible task of filming another musical in his spare time while traveling back and forth to a film festival all for the purpose of having enough films for the academy award committee to include best original song from a musical category for consideration for an oscar. (or some category like that) a minimum of 5 films were needed and only 3 would be nominated. if mirvish had 2 films in the running, then he had a very good chance of becoming oscar nominated. with such motivation, he pulled it off and made a movie but the academy were too horrified that the eligible films (including "team america") could actually win that they canceled the category. a shame. to quote "south park", 'you bastards!'
