ipod (no) video [geeking]

just now i tried to check out the video feature of twiddle thumbs's ipod because we're heading off to disneyland and i wanted to watch music videos as we wait in line. found out you can't watch any old video file, not even ones that are pretty standard on the web. the files have to be one of the following formats: m4v, mp4, mov. it sucks because for audio the ipod can handle the standard formats on the web: mp3, wav, aiff. what is the recommended video format conversion procedure? exporting with quicktime pro. clearly this is a scheme to get people to purchase quicktime pro. why do we need to pay more money to use a standard feature of a device? bullshit. i need to get quicktime pro anyway but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow.
