mysterious skin [watching]
i finally got to watch gregg araki's new movie, "mysterious skin", though it really isn't new anymore. typical of araki, it has some fucked up moments but you can't blame araki for that as it's based on a book. actually, the fucked up moments are pretty disturbing and i would warn people of it before viewing, though the 2 people i knew who saw it didn't warn me, they simply said it's a good movie. i really can't say if it's a good movie or summarize how i feel about the film. i need to watch it at least one more time and i want to read the book, of course.
the basic reduction of the film though is something i wanted to do, which is an adult having fragmented memories from childhood. the adult talks to friends and family as they go on a journey to piece the puzzle together. once the pieces are in place, a discovery is made and what was once fuzzy is now clear in a "ah-ha" type moment. in my basic idea for the film, i didn't have any particular memories or revelations in mind which makes my film idea too vague and weak. the memories/revelations in "mysterious skin" are pretty good ones. by that i mean that there are few things that could happen in childhood that would be so traumatic as to fuzzify one's memory and "mysterious skin" picked one of if not the strongest one emotionally to use in a narrative, child molestation.
