king tut [living]
we had tickets for the king tut exhibit last night (or early this morning) at lacma for entry at 12am-1am. i was kinda pissed off at my mom for not going there early and not going directly to the museum. originally we bought tickets for me, twiddle thumbs, and nopalita to go this past wednesday, but due to schedules twiddle thumbs went with her sisters. today (or last night) i went with my mom and nopalita. i've been really good about going to bed early like a good little worker bee and so staying up so late for a museum was really gonna fuck up my sleeping schedule. my mom had to meet a friend to pick up something in torrance so we went there first. she didn't tell me it was a dance hall.
picture it: southern california, 2005. a young lady accompanies her mother to a german village for what she thinks will be a short meeting of the mother getting an item from a friend. instead, they walk into a dancehall of the elderly who are dressed up and dancing in styles not appropriate to the music. the mother is spotted by her friend and is forced to dance, again and again seeing as she is so popular. the young lady and her friend wait anxiously for a 3,000 year old mummy awaits them and soon their carriage will turn back into a pumpkin. when the band begins to play that damn achey breaky heart song and a room full of senior citizens begin to line dance, it must be the apocalypse.
turns out my mom's friend forgot to bring the item my mom insisted on picking up before going to the museum. also, while we were at the dance place, she said "it's ok if we're late, right?" NO! our tickets are for 12am-1am--now get your ass off the dance floor and into the car! i tell you, it seems that these days i'm the parent.
thanks to learning to drive in LA, i am able to get us to the museum and in line by around 12:30pm. despite the late hour, it is still crowded and there are children. i didn't know we would have to queue outside. perhaps i would have brought my jacket with me, perhaps. we get inside and i read just about every damn description for each exhibit. i only missed 4 at the most. i never do that. i usually skip descriptions. but this is different, this is special. we were at the museum for longer than our tired bodies could handle. we perused the gift shop but purchased nothing. the old me would have bought something. the new me has no money and is trying to be a minimalist--i have too many things as it is to get more stuff. we got home at around 3:20am.
i have heard about the fabulous king tut exhibit that showed in the usa in the 1970s for so many years. now it's my turn to see these items first hand. and you know what? it just couldn't live up to the years of hype. i suppose i have been interested in ancient egypt for so long that this particular collection wasn't that spectacular. it has long been one of my dreams/goals in life to go to egypt and see the pyramids, the other ruins and monuments, the museums, the rebuilt library of alexandria, travel down the nile, and of course see the other famous museums of the world that house egyptian artifacts. one day.
