grocery shopping in the barrio [living]
there is a super market chain that shall remain nameless but shopping there is like shopping in the barrio. true that "barrio" only means neighborhood in spanish but it is contextually used as "ghetto" or "mexican ghetto" in southern california. shopping at this particular super market chain is like stepping into a mexican ghetto, no matter what neighborhood you are in. we go there once in awhile because they sell the only chai we like the cheapest of any store--bolthouse farms vanilla chai tea with soy protein. the reason for this particular visit however was for fresh produce but it wasn't that fresh. we don't like to get produce from chinese and korean markets anymore because while they are cheap they just aren't fresh. it looks like we will have to spend more money if we want fresh veggies. while we were there, twiddle thumbs and i did our usual cultural exchange (i asked her which products she enjoyed as a child and so forth and i do the same in japanese stores) but we didn't stay very long because that place just has a weird, creepy feeling overall. at least to me it does. the produce section had an overwhelming stench of mold so really, the food isn't fresh at all nor clean so there wasn't reason to stay. it's a super market, not a hang out afterall. we also picked up some motor oil for twiddle thumbs's car. motor oil for sale in a super market? now that's ghetto!
