corporate hq [working]
this morning i drove down to corporate headquarters in san diego county. i thought i'd be there for 2 hours in the morning, have lunch, then another 2 hours in the afternoon. no, we got everything taken care of in about 2 hours. i was supposed to meet with the assistant to the top chiefs to get a sense of what i'd be doing, get a cell phone for work, and meet with human resources for more paperwork. everyone in the company is so young that it's a bit of shellshock to me coming from the old ladies of university administration. also a bit getting used to is the lack of days off and not as much coverage or freedom of health care insurance benefits. everyone seems to think that working at a university entitles you to summers off. no, that's not how it goes. you work all the time except you do get about 2 weeks total of winter break, which is really nice for taking a vacation. i'm not getting that at this job so i won't be able to take vacations. however, if i stay with the company long enough, say 4 years, then i will get 20 days per year of vacation. that's nothing like some european countries though that have 6 weeks off per year minimum. i should move over there.
