what happens when the intoxication of success has evaporated? [listening]

bauhaus last night at the wiltern was amazing. the lighting scheme was cool but i would have hated to be right in the front, i would have been blinded, so it was a good thing that we were only able to get tickets in the upper section. this was one of the bands that really shaped me early on as a teenager and they pretty much played all the songs i love give or take a few. (it would've been cool to hear "st. vitus dance", "scopes", or "nerves".) of course i've always loved daniel ash's guitar playing. another thing i loved about bauhaus's music is kevin haskin's drumming. it's not what would be on a typical rock/pop song. it can be sparse and minimal but that only adds to the power of it. at the concert though i was blown away by david j's bass. just this deep THUD! it was freakin' awesome.

tonight i could be with you

the band is getting old and so i didn't expect a long show but they were a bit cuntish about the encores. i'm starting to agree with steve isaacs about bands should just play what they're gonna play and not do an encore, not feed their egos by making fans wait for what they were gonna play anyway. however, it was clear that bauhaus were done for the night and the audience was not happy that they did not play their signature tune "bela lugosi's dead'. while i feel it's sad that they should be forced to play this at each show, the flip side to this is that you just have to hear that song at a bauhaus concert. somehow their show is not complete without it. after some serious applaud demanding the band to come back out and play "bela", they did just that. a beautiful evening.

at the merchandise booth i got a shirt and some pins. there's also this thing called instant live where they record the show and sell it on cd minutes after the concert ends. they've teamed up with bauhaus for this tour. the cds are a great memory of your evening. i wish all concerts provided this service. then we went out back to wait for the band. what the hell, how often does one get to see this band? how often does one get to see a band that shaped your life? so i tried to get my cd signed and some pictures taken. and i actually did get it. we missed peter murphy but i got my cd signed by the rest of the guys. all were in a hurry and rushed things except for kevin. he was really nice and i told my sad story of how years ago back in santa cruz before a love and rockets show i took a picture with the haskins brothers but it never came out. so i got to take a picture with kevin and even though it was on my shitty digital camera, it didn't come out half bad.
