sucky weekend [living]

this weekend was pretty sucky. not fair. it was supposed to be pretty good. we had been building it up. this was supposed to be a good weekend. we were waiting for it. putting off other things because of people who were supposed to visit this weekend. my brother didn't visit afterall and we didn't go to knott's scary farm (or at least do something fun) with dani like we thought we were going to do.

we went to the japanese show today that had also been hyped up. my mom said that it will be song and dance performances from all over japan. we were conned. it was not what i expected. the first part were song and dance performances, but it wasn't that great. i wouldn't even say it was good. each performance was done by a kenjinkai (associations for japanese immigrants based on what prefecture they came from) but it wasn't necessarily something that is traditional to their prefecture. one group that i did enjoy was from hiroshima. they did a parody of a japanese variety show, "nodo jiman", that has been on television for years and every japanese knows it. it's a japanese version of the apollo, the gong show, or that spanish show where the guy comes out and takes you away if you suck. you get the idea.

that crazy awa dance from tokushima

things came to a sleeping hault mid-show during a long ass boring awards presentation. why do japanese always ruin things with an awards ceremony that takes forever? everyone has to speak and they end up saying the same thing--ok, we get it! now on with the show!

not to be ageist, but a lot of it was for old people. seriously. i realize that those who hold the traditions and can perform it with the respect it deserves are likely to be old but come on. just admit that this performance was for senior citizens. the second half of the show was a troupe of older women who would do performance dances to songs, sometimes singing them, but mostly acting them out through dance. as the troupe was all female and many of the songs were about love/relationships, women played male roles. as i watched this, i wondered about queers of old. what it was like and what it meant to go to single gender troupe performances as a queer person, to watch men play women and vice versa, and the kind of eroticizations, fanticizations, and ritualizations of theater attendance in general of queer audience members. then it started getting really weird in my head so i had to snap out of it and just face it that my mom likes to go to drag king shows. aaaaahaahahahahaaaa

afterwards, we were supposed to meet with dani and his girlfriend for dinner after they hung out in santa monica or something. we called them after the show was over and they just reached santa monica and were going to eat. they told us to eat before we go down there to meet them. fuck that! we're not dressed for the beach--we actually dressed up for this japanese thing--and we're too hungry to go all the way to santa monica, and for what? so we didn't hang out with dani. we went home.

we had to do something fun and productive so we called up jc fandango's, went over there and bought tickets to the victimas del dr. cerebro show this week. i am so excited! it isn't halloween without a victimas show.
