honorary mexican [living]
my mexican-american friends and i joke that i am an "honorary mexican" given my interest in the country, love of the food, music, and so forth. apparently, word has gotten around. all the way to credit centers no less. today i received my first junk mail in spanish. i knew it was in spanish even before i opened the envelope because i could see through the window was "a la orden de:" above my name and address. clearly this is some sort of credit card, loan, money junk mail. open it up. yes it is. an offer for a loan of $6,000.95, all written in spanish. i love the 95 cents bit. think of what i can do with that extra 95 cents.
this reminds me of the time when i was in high school and they handed students a copy of their record so that they could check if the details were correct. something on my record caught my eye: my ethnicity was listed as being mexican. i had my brother check his record and he was noted as being japanese. how the hell did they come up with me being mexican?! i had it corrected but later when it was time to apply for financial aid for college and everyone seemed to get something but me, (all i wanted was at least to qualify for work-study but they only offered me a few thousand in loans), i thought i should've stuck with being mexican.
