the awful truth: 2 broken discs in a row [watching]
i finally got to watch the first disc of the second season of "michael moore's the awful truth". this is the third disc i've received from netflix. it's bizarre but the first two were cracked/broken. this third disc is the replacement for the replacement! so strange that this is the only time i've ever received a broken disc from netflix and that the replacement disc was cracked as well. it's almost like someone doesn't want me to watch this dvd. hmmm, it must be that good! wrong. it's not bad but it's not that good. just good. i think the first disc of the first season was the best one.
the other movie that came in was "d.e.b.s.", which i originally heard about when it was playing at the gay and lesbian film festival in wellington. the description seemed funny enough--secret group of female spies recruited from high schoolers taking the sat test--but i wanted to save my money so i made sure that netflix had a copy before running off to the screening. only in netflix it was simply listed as a comedy so i thought that any pink overtones must be thin or under the surface. turns out it's another not so bad, just good, film. it's more for fun than anything. there are a couple of big name actors in it that seem to be a waste--i'm thinking not only in terms of being frugal with budget as this was not a major hollywood vehicle but also because their scenes were few or their lines not packed with enough punch (i.e., holland taylor as mrs. petrie). however, given the history of this film--starting off as a comic drawn for fun in college by the novice filmmaker--i'd rise my rating by a couple points. my only big criticism is of one scene used in the montage sequence of when the villain lucy diamond goes good. lucy and cohort lip-synching = duuuuuumb.
