netflix buffet [watching]
twiddle thumbs is leaving this weekend so we tried to watch all the netflix discs we have (the awful truth season 2 disc 2, secret window, tying the knot). while she's gone i'm going to try and watch a lot of netflix dvds that she's not interested in. a netflix buffet, if you will.
"secret window" was so-so. kinda predictable. it was better than i expected 'cos i was expecting something really lame. it was worse than twiddle thumbs expected. "tying the knot" is a documentary on the recent developments of the gay marriage rights movement. it could've used a little tidying up but overall it was pretty good. at least i hope that it makes the audience think about the issues at hand and how people are affected by not having the rights acquired via legal marriage. a couple of cases are featured and they're really quite sad. also, i never really paid attention to the political arguments against it was was pretty disgusted by the clips shown because they were ridiculous arguments. shit like, gay marriage is going against 3000 years of history. such bullshit. marriage today is nothing like marriage even 100 years. 3000 years ago men had 10 wives. i still haven't heard a decent argument as to how opposite-sex marriage is threatened by same-sex marriage. that's another line that's always used. that and protecting the traditional concept of family. rejecting same-sex marriage in order to protect the institution of marriage...rubbish! if you want to protect marriage, make it harder to divorce! and stop the social stigma against being gay so that there are much less closeted persons who marriage out of a fear to conform, have kids, then freak out 'cos they can't handle the sham anymore and get a divorce. if you want to protect families, provide more resources and assistance for family counselors, babysitting services, affordable healthcare, etc.
