what i do as an intern [working]
i realized i haven't talked about what exactly it is that i do as an intern. put it this way, i'm soon going to be over my dislike of talking on the phones 'cos that's all i pretty much did the first two days. i spent all day cold calling over 100 restaurants (literally!) in the phone book, doing the groundwork for location scouting. i was finding out the basics like the approximate capacity and their hours of operation. if it sounded like a possible fit, then i would ask to talk to the manager or owner about the possibility of filming there. if they were interested to the idea then i would tell them about our needs such as how many days and how many hours and what our budget was to pay them for using their restaurant. doing this has whittled the list down to about 20 places. about 5 of them i still need to talk to a manager or owner to find out if they're ok with the possibility of using their restaurant. we're sending a location scout for $100 a day to 14 locations to take pictures and such. shit man, if they asked me, i would have done it for gas money only. this is the kind of stuff i thought i might be asked to do. i might be an eager beaver and keep calling places over the weekend and scouting them out myself but this might be stepping out of line so early into the internship. then again, i have to really show them what i'm capable of so that this leads to future opportunities. the only thing i'm hesitant about is the location scout position could lead to location manager which i think will be a lot of headaches. that's not for me. i don't want to be a manager.
calling all these restaurants on the phone, it's amazing how many of them have already been used for filming and also how many brag about what has been film there. i found the place that was used for melrose place but i've already forgotten which restaurant that is. that guy went on and on about it! how they still have set pieces and that aaron spelling paid way too much to rent the place. it's also interesting to note how many idiots work at restaurants. how many people do not know the word "capacity". how many people get confused when you ask them, "what are your hours?".
the other thing i have been doing research on is camera rentals. calling around the various places in the area to find out how much it would be for a specific camera with a wide angle lens, tripod, field monitor, that sort of thing. you would think it would be more economical for a film company to have their own equipment than rent it for each film shoot but with today's rapidly evolving and upgrading digital technology, renting for each shoot is probably the wiser investment rather than committing yourself to something that will be obsolete when the first film shoot is over.
they see now that i don't sit around twiddling my thumbs and that i get things done quickly. they have given me some responsibility. it looks like i'm going to hire some more interns! too funny. they asked me to place an ad to look for interns, which means that i had to put out my contact info. so i guess i'll talk to those that apply and tell them to come on down. i don't think it really matters who talks to them. they just want more bodies in the office to help out.
