aterciopelados at the getty museum [listening]

andrea_getty_group.jpg
andrea echeverri and aterciopelados

today we went to go see aterciopelados at the getty museum. that's right, at a museum. when i first heard about this, i couldn't believe it. one of my favorite bands performing at a museum? damn, that's cool! aterciopelados is art!!! the museum provided a program for the events of the evening, naturally. they were billed as 'andrea echeverri and aterciopelados' and were scheduled to play in the courtyard at 7:45pm-8:45pm, the last of the evening.

we got there while los super elegantes were performing. more like los super crappies. the female singer wasn't into it. the male singer was annoying. the drummer looked like nicholas cage's not too bright clone. but enough about them. onto the main event!

we were able to get right in front, only security maintained about a foot of clear space from the stage. that's ok--didn't damper the evening. the set was a little different from last night and since i was right up in front, i was able to observe the little instruments that andrea would bring out to add some ethereal tones to the songs. in addition to the traditional colombian folk wind instrument on "el estuche", andrea brought out a whirly for "menos mal", some sort of native looking shaker for "baracunatana", another type of shaker for "rompecabezas", and a thunder tube for "candela".

perhaps it was due to the intimate space and how close i was to the stage, but the band sounded much better than last night, even though they could not play too loud or fast since they were at a museum. andrea seemed more into the performance. it was not as hot as it was at yesterday's venue. perhaps that was one of the factors as it's a bit colder in bogota due to the high elevation (about 30 degrees F colder than LA!). one thing that did surprise me was when andrea spoke english...and it was so clear. i had no idea she could speak it. i guess i won't have to struggle so much the next time i get to talk to her.

after their set was over, we hurried around to the other side of the stage where the band was exiting and were able to quickly get andrea to sign her cd and take a picture that didn't have flash so it's all blurry. this only our second time meeting andrea so i hope there is a third. i didn't have time to go to our storage unit and grab some cds or the picture we took with her last time.
