bewitched [watching]

hung out with nopalita today so that we could trade stuff--we have a few of her things and she has a lot of our things as we made her take back some of our luggage. this is the first time we see each other since coming back from new zealand. i think the steam has blown over 'cos she was really friendly, plus we bought her a 24 pack of fosters, some more new zealand beers, and got her a bunch of chocolate soy milk too.

in the evening, we went to the movies and when we arrived, the next thing that was playing that none of us had seen and were even remotely interested in was "bewitched". if you are american and have not seen the tv show then you are not familiar with pop culture so don't even bother talking to me. i first watched the show when i was living with my grandparents after my dad died. i can still picture my 6 year old ass sitting down watching the tv as my grandmother ironed.

the film isn't exactly what you think it'd be. it's about remaking the tv show, with will ferrell as jack wyatt, the has-been actor trying to revive his career stupidly by remaking "bewitched" and playing darrin (darren in this version), the husband that as jack wyatt puts it, nobody likes, which is true. he reminisces about how great the original show was and yeah, it had its moments. those scenes make you feel warm and tingly about the show but they never show clips of the show in the color years, just the early days in black and white. those scenes only reinforce that the original was so much better. perhaps they should've just made a film version of the show instead of this whole behind the scenes sort of thing.

i think will ferrell is awkward in films. perhaps it's a bit of a stretch for him. he's great in small things like the "saturday night live" skits he did, but i have a hard time with him in larger roles. i haven't really seen his other films roles because of this. however, there are a couple scenes where he steals the show and your sides hurt from laughing so much. well, maybe just 1, but it's worth it!

nicole kidman plays isabel bigelow, a witch just like samantha who wants to live a mortal life. she promises to stop using her powers but can't help it because she is not adjusted to mortal life. she bumps into jack wyatt and he wants her to play samantha. during the course of the film, they shoot the first two episodes of the show. i like kidman, as an actress she's pretty decent and she has my respect for working on her craft and really getting into it for roles. however, i'm not a fan, i don't jump to see her films. though i do applaud her for not being cruise's beard anymore. this film to me really didn't have the samantha vibe, it was more like, 'i'm nicole kidman and i can be cute and innocent. cute when i'm happy and cute when i'm angry. i can wear flats and capris to downplay my height and make my co-stars look taller.' i just wasn't into it.

shirley maclaine is excellent as the actress iris who plays endora. really great campy performance on that one. carole shelley is perfect as aunt clara, only it's a bit weird that they put in her character to be isabel's real aunt but named clara and looks and acts just like the show's aunt clara. i guess they didn't know how else to put aunt clara in the film and you have to have aunt clara. uncle arthur exists as a figment of jack wyatt's imagination. kinda lame but it comes off more believable than the aunt clara relationship. mrs. kravitz and abner appear at the very end as real life neighbors to isabel. the "real" life and tv show lines are blurred but if you ignore all that, then it's fun just to see the characters brought to life one more time but save your money for when it hits the almost on video theaters. and where the hell was dr. bombay?
