museum and domain [living]

maori figure from the museum

today is another holiday! yea! new year's day observed. we went to go do something. we went to the auckland museum, which is located inside the auckland domain--a huge park in the city, akin to central park in new york city. we walked around the domain just a little bit. we saw the area for playing cricket.

the museum is a lot bigger than i thought it would be. it has a large section on maori and polynesian cultures. we attended the maori dance/song performance. i really wanted to see a haka and this was more like an introduction. there was a good explanation of the weapons used but overall it was really short and lacking.

the very top floor is dedicated to war. for some reason i am always fascinated by WWII. i probably took the most pictures in this section. (it was really cool that you can take pictures so freely in this museum! probably my first time experiencing such photo freedom.) perhaps because in some way i over romanticize this particular war as being the reason for my existence.
