today i signed up for a library card. you're not really a member of a community until you have a local library card. i signed up at the central branch and it was well, small. i mean the collection was small. they don't even completely utilize the dewey decimal system. for fiction, the books are arranged by authors and the books are tagged by the first 3 letters of the author's last name. that's it. that's the only coding. maybe that's how it goes in a lot of places. i can't remember. it's been so long since i actually checked out fiction! i've been borrowing nothing but books for research purposes at the university library for a decade.

multi-media is not free to check out. you have to pay $5 a week for a dvd, $3 a week for cd, etc. you even have to pay for the recent acquisitions, AKA "what's hot". $5 a week for those items. so i guess i won't be reading "the da vinci code" while i'm here. the selection of cds was quite poor. then again, i didn't have much time to browse as i did my usual, arrive 15 minutes before they close routine.

i went to the library armed with a long list of books i wanted to read. the library only had a few of those titles in stock. the rest were either checked out or lost. lost! how horrible. some of the titles i was interested in were available at the other branches. i think i'll exhaust the central branch before i dip into the other branches.
